His guidance and care has been so very important in my professional and personal development. I am grateful to Professor Andrés Zamora for taking an interest in me as an undergraduate and for the close bond of scholarship and friendship that has developed between us, ultimately culminating in this project. Having spent my entire academic career heretofore at Vanderbilt University, I am greatly indebted to so many of the wonderful people that work in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
